Description
On October 10th the Sequim Bay Yacht Club will present Mr. John Goar to speak on his efforts to build a better understanding of astronomy among the residents of the Peninsula. A master observer of the Astronomical League and a volunteer at Olympic National Park, John has provided free public telescope programs on Hurricane Ridge for nearly 8,000 viewers. Since 2010 he has presented 230 night sky programs, supplying equipment and education for participants to enjoy galaxies, star clusters, nebulae, supernova remnants and planets. In addition to the 1,500 hours he has devoted to astronomy programs and moon walks, John has served 3,000 hours as a campground host. He has gone above and beyond the normal duties of welcoming guests and overseeing the campground by also sorting and recycling thousands of pounds of glass, plastics, paper, and cardboard. For all of this, John was recognized by the National Park Service in 2016 with the George and Helen Hartzog Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service and in 2017 earned the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Obama.
