Description
For those who missed or wanted to hear more from Dr. Roger Oakes at his presentation last year in partnership with ONP, we are excited to welcome Roger to the Port Angeles Fine Art Center in honor of our exhibit “Surf, Skate & Snow” to regale us with the stories of social connections made through skiing in the Olympics. Retired physician Dr. Roger Merrill Oakes, founder and past president of the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club, will present from his book “Skiing in Olympic National Park” written with support from the cultural resource group at Olympic National Park and many local skiers. His book highlights the stories of the people and places that helped to form the local ski culture we are familiar with today. In particular his book highlights stories from time spent at Deer Park Lodge which operated from 1937- 1957. Among those regulars, was our very own Esther Webster. While Esther was not terribly interested in skiing, she spent a significant amount of time at the lodge drawing and documenting the scene around her. We will pull Esther’s sketches and notes from the archive to share for one night only and Roger will share his connections with the Websters and other key figures in the development of our ski areas. Event Schedule: 6:00-6:30pm- Mingling, lite bites, drinks, exhibit viewing 6:30-7:30pm- Presentation and Q&A 7:30-8:00pm- Mingling, light bites, drinks, exhibit viewing
