Description
The gardening season may be winding down, but proper care in autumn and winter plays a major role in next year's berry harvest. Gardeners are invited to attend "Fall and Winter Berry Care," the final class in the eight-part Homegrown Berry Series, on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The free class will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Dungeness River Nature Center, 1943 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim, WA 98382. Presented by veteran Clallam County Master Gardener and berry enthusiast Jeanette Stehr-Green, this practical and timely class will focus on the steps gardeners can take in fall and late winter to keep berry plants healthy and productive. Participants will learn: • How to prepare blueberry, strawberry, raspberry and blackberry plants for winter weather • How to identify and address common winter problems, including cold injury, waterlogging, and animal damage • Late winter pruning and cleanup tasks in the berry patch By understanding how berry plants respond to seasonal changes, gardeners can reduce winter damage, improve plant health, and set the stage for stronger growth and higher yields in the coming year. This session will also cover prevention and control of diseases and pests in the berry patch. Attendees who have had berry problems are invited to bring photos or plant materials for show-and-tell during the class and comments from the instructor. Please bring plant samples in a sealable bag. The Homegrown Berry Series is offered by the Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners, who provide research-based gardening education to the public. Admission is free and open to all. Registration is not required but helpful to ensure accommodation for all attendees.
