Description
Do your mustard greens resemble Swiss cheese, pocked with little holes and a lot of sadness? Flea beetles are the likely culprits, and these little buggers have a big appetite! Join WSU Clallam County Extension Regional Horticulture Specialist Laurel Moulton for the Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Flea Beetles” to find out how to keep these naughty nibblers at bay. Some flea beetle species are common pests of kale, broccoli and tender greens in the brassica family, while others love potatoes and tomatoes. Laurel will help you learn all about these garden insects, including how to identify them, what kind of damage to look for and how to manage them. Gardeners who attend this lecture will come away with knowledge and skills to use Integrated Pest Management techniques to prevent or minimize damage to their vegetable crops using a methods that are the least harmful to the environment and other organisms. Laurel has been a Master Gardener since 2006 and received her master's degree in horticulture with a minor in entomology from Oregon State University in 2011. She is currently a member of the WSU Extension Integrated Pest Management Team and spends her time outside of Master Gardeners helping small farms in Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap Counties to accurately identify pests and crop diseases while developing plans to manage them sustainably. She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for insects and growing food with the community. The Green Thumb Education Series presentation “Flea Beetles” will be held in person on Thursday, April 25th from noon – 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Avenue in Port Angeles.
