Adapted by Joan Didion from her National Book Award–winning memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking is a riveting exploration of love, loss, and the unpredictable nature of grief. The play chronicles the year following the sudden death of Didion’s husband, writer John Gregory Dunne, while their daughter lay critically ill in a hospital ICU. Through precise, unflinching storytelling, Didion reveals how “magical thinking” — the belief that one can undo the unthinkable simply by refusing to accept it — becomes both a coping mechanism and a window into the human mind under extreme emotional strain.
This stage adaptation distills Didion’s reflections into a compelling one-woman performance, offering audiences a raw, moment-to-moment experience of mourning, memory, and the quiet strength required to move forward.
