OPAS Backyard Birding: “Bird Nests & Breeding Season Beginnings¬”

Presenters: Ken Wiersema & Ben Hannah Saturday, February 7, 2026, 10:00 a.m. to noon Dungeness River Nature Center Suggested donation: $5. With spring just over the horizon, presenters Ken Wiersema and Ben Hannah will focus on bird nesting behaviors, which are observable signs of the start of a new breeding season. The talk will highlight how pair-bonding is integral to nesting behaviors as well how various species differ in selecting building sites, constructing nests, and performing parenting duties. Additionally, the program will include a “how to” walk through for birdwatchers of every age and skill level—encouraging everyone to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count (sponsored by National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology) upcoming on February 13–16, 2026. The presentation will introduce the eBird application for cell phones and computers—a tool essential for reporting bird sightings to fellow birdwatchers and to the North American bird data science networks. Admission to this program is free. However, we ask attendees to consider a donation of $5.00 per person to support ongoing OPAS education and conservation programs.
