Description
“The M9 Project” is a collaboration between the University of Washington and U.S. Geological Survey to reduce the catastrophic potential of a magnitude 9 earthquake in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Erin Wirth, Research Geologist, will show the results of computer simulations that demonstrate 50 different ways a magnitude 9 earthquake could unfold. Overall, coastal regions that are closer to the fault will experience the most severe ground shaking, as well as areas located on soft sediments. However, the intensity of shaking at any given location can vary by up to a factor of 10, depending on the specific earthquake scenario.
