Description
The Sequim Accordion Social will be held at the Sequim Shipley Center at 921 E. Hammond Street on Sunday, July 9th, from 1 to 4 pm. A $2-3 admission donation is requested at the door to pay for the room. The Featured Player is Doris Osgood from Forest Grove, OR. Join fellow accordion players, enthusiasts and dancers for an afternoon of music and fun. Players of ALL levels are encouraged to bring their accordion and play 1-3 pieces. The intent of the social is to have a supportive and friendly atmosphere, where players can play and everyone can enjoy some great music. Doris was born in Arkansas, but her family moved to Port Orchard, WA when she was young. At 7, a door to door salesman identified her talent and got her started on accordion lessons. A number of teachers rotated to her home initially. One teacher, Eric Liebmann was a stand out. Originally from Chicago, he was a great performer and played nightly in Bremerton. When he moved away, she had to decide to quit or continue. She knew she needed a good teacher, and at age 11, she began studying with Betty Stafford who herself had studied under Joe Spano and with Maestro Anthony Galla-Rini. Doris spent her first year with Betty unlearning bad habits, but soon made enough progress to join the senior ensemble and band. The band and ensemble placed first in competitions for several years. Lessons ended when she attended and graduated from WSU. She married her husband Gary shortly thereafter. Gary, whose job was in banking meant they moved around for several years. Doris taught in public schools, retiring from the Forest Grove School district in 2012. During a 9 year break in teaching, Doris worked at home raising 2 sons. At (Papa) Joe Petosa’s encouragement Doris found and joined Eileen Hagen’s ensemble when she moved to Forest Grove. She played concerts and competitions with them for several years. She was part of the ensemble when it placed first in the competition at Kimberley in 1998. Living now in Forest Grove, Doris leads the Tualatin Valley Accordionsts ensemble, which meets monthly. She also produces a large regional accordion celebration twice each year, which she’s done for the last 27 years! Doris does much to further the accordion in the Northwest, editing the NWAS news, contributing to the Leavenworth International Accordion Celebration, teaching, and organizing scholarships for young accordion players. She’s a delightful player!
