Description
Come hear a delightful program of short and upbeat classical music performed by the Sequim Community Orchestra Friday, June 17, at 7 p.m.Music Director Phil Morgan Ellis has chosen several pieces befitting the increased skill of the orchestra players. “Rumanian Folk Dances” for small orchestra by Bela Bartok is a collection of short pieces based on Romanian folk tunes Bartok heard in his youth. Also on the program is the “Valse Triste” by Sibelius, based on a folk tale of a young son sitting by the bed of his dying mother. When the boy falls asleep, the mother arises from her bed and dances with a group of ghost like figures, to a “wild, mad rhythm.” You can hear the complete story in Sibelius’ music.Music by Mozart and two pieces by Richard Meyer, winner of the 1989 National String Orchestra Association competition for new compositions, complete the program.Join the Sequim Community Orchestra in this free concert, suitable for the entire family. Help us celebrate the memory of SCO trumpet and tuba player Rex Abbott, who passed away this spring. We are grateful to Rex and his wife, Carolyn, for their support, both musical and logistical. Rex was always cheerful and willing to lend a hand, as well as a fine trumpet player, and it is with gratitude that we dedicate this program of music to him.We invite all to come to this free concert, enjoy lively and entertaining music and join musicians for refreshments after the performance. Friday June 17, 7 p.m. Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 N. Blake Avenue, Sequim.
