Did you know the melody for “Shenandoah” was originally sung with different lyrics by sailors at sea? The concert features this music and other pieces that focus on sailors and the sea. A sampling of other offerings will be selections from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance”, “Eternal Father Strong to Save (United States Navy Hymn)”, selections from the movie “Titanic”, and “Russian Sailors Dance” – the most well known song from the ballet “The Red Poppy”. Our announcer Karl Bach, retired U.S. Navy musician and conductor of the Port Townsend Summer Band, will also lead the band in Sousa’s “Who’s Who in Navy Blue”. Spend the afternoon with the band for its first indoor concert of the 2018-19 season.
