Description
Watering your garden properly is fundamental in growing healthy plants, but how do you find the “sweet spot” between too much water and not enough? Find out how to strike that perfect balance by learning the four key elements to watering. Join Master Gardener Tom del Hotal and his irrigation team for the Digging Deeper Saturdays presentation “Watering the Garden Efficiently,” Saturday, July 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden. Drip irrigation is efficient and healthier for plants because it puts the water where it is needed and saves time, money and resources. After a brief overview of drip irrigation, Tom and his irrigation team will be on hand to help familiarize small groups of participants with drip irrigation components. They will explain the importance of understanding where, when and how much water different plants need. Many common problems brought to the Master Gardener plant clinic are due to watering mistakes. The goal of the presentation is to demonstrate to the home gardener that a simple residential drip irrigation is a very “do-able” do-it-yourself project and to encourage further learning. Resources, including on-line references and YouTube videos are good and plentiful to further assist gardeners. Tom del Hotal joined Clallam County Master Gardeners in 2021. Tom has a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and four advanced certifications from the California Association of Nursery and Garden Centers. He is an ISA Certified Arborist, a certified pesticide applicator, and a member of the International Plant Propagators Society. Tom was a part-time horticulture instructor at Southwestern College in San Diego, California, for more than 20 years and operated his own nursery and consulting business, Fantasia Gardens, from 1983-2020. Having come from southern California where water conservation has been a long-standing issue, Tom promotes water efficient irrigation practices and irrigation programs that optimize plant health and performance. Digging Deeper presentations are held from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the third Saturday of selected months. Presentations cover basic gardening topics relevant to many home gardeners. Presentations are free and open to the public and are scheduled for 90-minutes to allow for demonstrations and questions from viewers. “Watering the Garden Efficiently” is scheduled to occur out of doors, in-person at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim. Attendees are encouraged to check the Clallam County Master Gardener online calendar for updates about the location of the talk at https://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/master-gardener-calendar/.
